The Philosophy of Good Sex

Moderator: Dominic Bonfiglio, Potsdam

Since the 1970s and even more since the beginning of the MeToo movement, feminist and philosophical discussions about sex have broadly focused, and for good reasons, on bad sex: what should be forbidden? Is “consent” the right tool? Is there something like sexual deviance and if so what is it exactly? However, these important discussions have put aside the question of what sex should be. In this talk, I will explain why the question of good sex is as burning and important a question and I will proceed to offer elements of response.

Manon Garcia is a French philosopher. She is a junior professor of practical philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin and the author of two books, We Are Not Born Submissive (Princeton University Press, 2021; published in German by Suhrkamp as Wir werden nicht unterwürfig geboren) and The Joy of Consent: A Philosophy of Good Sex (Harvard University Press, 2023; published in German by Suhrkamp as Das Gespräch der Geschlechter).
