Imagining Survival

With the image of a meandering river, this will be an attempt at charting the (dis)course about what it might mean to survive nuclear war. The popular imagination was fed by civil defence pamphlets, literature, journalism, politics, music, television and film. It was different in different places – here the UK and the USA – and at different times – from the 1950s through the 1980s. Lamentably, the river has since run dry.

Martin Schaad is the Assistant Director of the Einstein Forum. He studied history, economics and philosophy at Stirling University before completing a D.Phil in modern history at St Antony’s College, Oxford. He was also awarded an MBA at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. His publications include: Bullying Bonn: Anglo-German Diplomacy on European Integration, 1955-61 (2000), “Dann geh doch rüber…” Über die Mauer in den Osten (2009) and Die fabelhaften Bekenntnisse des Genossen Alfred Kurella (2014).
