Online Event: Black Lives Matter, Universalism, and Hopes for the Left

Chair: Thomas Meaney

The international protests unleashed by the police murder of yet another African American, George Floyd, have few parallels in recent memory. What are the differences between these and earlier protests? What ideas motivate the very diverse activists? What are the tensions between identity politics and universalism, and does the present moment offer chances for reconciling them? How can we use this moment to work for substantive, lasting change?

Noam Chomsky is Institute Professor & Professor of Linguistics emeritus at MIT. His latest book is Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power (2017).
